ANNUAL 07 NELSON REGIONAL FOCUS REPORT

The population of Nelson City has grown by 3.2% from 2001 to 2006 and the Tasman regions population’ has grown by 7.9% over the same period. These population counts total 42,891 and 44,625 respectively. As well as the permanent population, the Nelson-Tasman area accommodates a large annual tourist population. The Ministry of Tourism recorded an annual total of 1,428,391 visitors in 2006.

The economy has grown in line with the population. The region operates at an unemployment rate of 3.3%, the fourth lowest in the country, according to June quarter 2007 results from Statistics New Zealand. The number of enterprises based in Nelson and Tasman has increased also over the five years from 2001 to 2006. In 2006 there were 8,526 businesses based in the area, an increase of 30% from the figure recorded in 2001. This increase is above the national rate of enterprise growth, which was 26% over the same period.
