ANNUAL 2008 GULF HARBOUR REPORTGulf HarbourLocated on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula 40 minutes north of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, Gulf Harbour provides visitors and residents with a fully integrated marine-lifestyle. The 350 hectares of prime coastal land utilised for the Gulf Harbour development is set amongst attractive beaches and national reserves. The Gulf Harbour facilities include a world-class golf course, country club and marina and boating facilities, with a town centre modelled on international concepts representative of the Mediterranean and Australia.
The quality of the golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr is illustrated by its use for the 2006 New Zealand Open and home to the 2005 United States Open winner Michael Campbell. The par 72 golf course totals 6,400 metres, with a number of holes positioned along the coastline. The 1,036 berth Gulf Harbour marina is the second largest in the Southern Hemisphere and provides direct access to the Hauraki Gulf, an area of safe water used for a wide range of recreational boating activities. The marina caters for boats of all sizes with berths for sale or lease ranging from 10.5 metres to 50 metres for super yachts. There are already schools, retail, restaurants and guest accommodation located within the development including Wentworth College and Gulf Harbour Primary School. For those working in Auckland City, a daily ferry service leaving from the marina provides a 45 minute alternative to commuting by car. The Hobbs’ Wharf and waterfront precinct development plan for the eastern side of the Gulf Harbour marina, formerly known as the Eastern Boat Harbour, is set to provide further facilities for residents and visitors. The development will comprise up to 2,000m2 of shops, restaurants and cafes, 1,000m2 of offices and 100 hotel rooms. The harbour is also being constructed to enable boats to moor and alight at the quayside enabling visitors from land and sea. The development of the Gulf Harbour project over the last decade has benefited from the master plan overseen by project leader Gulf Corporation and the Rodney District Council by providing a comprehensive outlook for sustainable growth. The rate of selldown of the property in Gulf Harbour has lead to a large portion of residential development already occurring in the last few years with approximately two thirds of the permitted 2,913 homes being constructed or consented. The remaining portion of homes yet to be built allows for further growth in an area where the recent strong population growth is forecast to continue supported by increased access to the area through infrastructural and ferry service improvements.
