JEWEL IN THE CROWN

Queenstown is considered by some to be the jewel in Tourism New Zealand’s crown. It is not surprising then that this has become Queenstown’s most lucrative industry and the one that the town is most dependent on. Growth in the tourism sector is fundamental to growth in the local economy.

Queenstown Airport Corporation has recently completed an upgrade of its international airport, which receives flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, increasing its capacity in light of favourable projected visitor numbers from the Ministry of Tourism.

At the end of 2006 the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) recorded a total of 3.36 million guest nights in Queenstown. These guests spent a total of $501 million dollars while visiting. MoT have released its Regional Tourism Forecast data from 2006 to 2013, showing a marked increase in the number of guest nights recorded by tourists in Queenstown and the amount of money spent.

From 2006 to 2013 the number of guest nights spent in Queenstown is expected to increase 22% from 3.36 million to 4.10 million. Over this time, the MoT expect the amount of money these tourists add to the industry to grow a further 57% over the seven year period, from $501 million last year to $787 million in 2013.

A number of new developments have either opened or are on the drawing board which will help to further boost Queenstown’s reputation as a five-star alpine resort. Among these is The Rees, a lakeside complex, which will comprise serviced apartments ranging in size from one to five bedrooms. The Club is another serviced apartment complex situated on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. The apartments range in size from 97 m2 to 302 m2 with either two, three or four bedrooms.

A further major addition to Queenstown’s tourism inventory will be Kawarau Falls Station. The Melview Developments project will include accommodation types ranging from residential apartment complexes to five-star plus hotel accommodation. Heavyweight hotel chains such as Quadrant, InterContinental and Westin are among those which will be represented in the development, bringing with them the benefits of international brand marketing strategies. Development will progress over three stages with a completion date of 2010.
