AUCKLAND’S EASTERN BEACHES

The ability to live at or close to some of Auckland’s most attractive beaches or within open rural surroundings whilst being close to major employment areas within Manukau City and Auckland’s CBD has made the Eastern Beaches area increasingly popular over recent years. This has resulted in population growth, residential development and increases in property values.

Auckland’s Eastern Beaches located primarily within the Manukau City wards of Howick, Pakuranga and Botany–Clevedon have experienced strong growth in terms of population and number of residential properties since the mid 1990’s, according to the results of the 2006 Census.

As the tables below illustrate, growth has been particularly significant in the Botany–Clevedon ward (which includes the newer suburbs of Dannemora and Botany) where the population increased by 68% between 1996 and 2001 and by a further 57.5% in the subsequent five year period. The growth has been most marked in suburbs such as Botany, Dannemora and particularly Point View where the population has increased from 582 in 1996 to 9,027 in 2006.

The increasing population level has also driven housing development as illustrated by the occupied dwelling count. Once again the increase has been most evident in the Botany – Clevedon ward where the dwelling count has increased from 5,430 in 1996 to 13,941 in 2006. Increases in Howick and Pakuranga have been more subdued due to the fact that being more established residential areas, development land has been in shorter supply.

The region continues to draw new residents due to the combination of a number of factors. The area is well located for commuting to Manukau City’s main employment areas and on to Auckland City’s CBD, which is only 25 kms to the north west. The area contains a number of quality schooling options including Macleans College, Bucklands Beach Intermediate, Mellons Bay Primary, Pakuranga College, Botany College, Somerville Intermediate and Howick College amongst many others. It also has proximity to St Kentigern College.

The Eastern Beaches themselves are amongst the most attractive in the Auckland Region and each offers a distinctive “feel”. The area is also uniquely placed to cater for those who wish to live amongst rural surroundings whilst being within easy reach of the coast, a facet which has resulted in villages such as Whitford becoming increasingly popular.
