FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT FOR NZ TOURISM

The latest national tourism forecasts issued by the government’s tourism research department predict significant growth over the next six years.

International visitor numbers reached a record high of 2.41 million in 2006, however, this total is forecast to grow substantially by 2013 when the total is tipped to reach 3.17 million, an increase of 31.4% over the period or an annual rate of 4%.

While the above figures reflect impressive growth they are eclipsed by the anticipated increase in total visitor expenditure which in 2006 sat at $6.38 billion but is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 7.4% to 2013 which will result in the total expenditure figure reaching $10.49 billion, a total increase of 64.6% over the forecast period.
