Established 28 years ago as Far North Farms, this property was one of the earliest planted avocado orchards in the Far North District, packing for local markets and exporting to the USA. The orchard currently consists of Duke 7 and Hass on Zutano rootstock trees, which were all propagated and grafted on site. Average three year production is currently sitting at 96.5t over the 20 hectares planted.
The orchard has now come to the end of its productive life and current tree health is limiting production. It is now at a stage of redevelopment from pan breaking, drainage, hump and hollowing, and replanting with new clonal trees which are more vigorous and produce more consistent yields at an earlier age.
Shelter is already in place with well-maintained Pinus radiata shelterbelts.
All orchard infrastructure is in place from secure water supply, implement and storage sheds, cool store, packhouse with three-phase power, propagation facility with concrete floor, three bedroom home and orchard machinery, to get the redevelopment underway.
An established wetland lies through the middle of the property surround by trees and shrubs, and this could be explored further as a means to capture runoff water for irrigation purposes.
Today, the Far North is home to some of the largest avocado orchards in the country. Favourable growing conditions and soil type allow growers to produce earlier and more consistent crops year on year when compared to other growing regions.
Whether you are looking to enter the avocado industry or looking to expand your existing operations, this property is well worth considering - order your trees and start the redevelopment.
