Snuggled in against the north facing slopes of the Waitakere Ranges is the very unique district of Oratia. Enjoying the best of both worlds this quiet rural community is only a 20 minute drive (in off peak) from the bustling centre of Auckland, yet the peaceful charm of the area allows you to feel you could be a 100 miles from a city. Oratia was first settled in the early 1800's and much of the rimu and kauri forest was felled for timber, later herders and then orchardists became established. Oratia Primary School opened it's doors to pupils in 1882 and is still a centre for the community. It hosts the school and district picnic, a tradition which dates back over 100 years. Bordering Titirangi along Scenic Drive Oratia has much in common with Titirangi but has the advantage of being north facing, less hilly and, because of it's pastoral heritage, many of it's properties are larger, brighter and sunnier.
