Established 18 years ago by an ex dairy farmer with a horticultural degree and a passion for his subject this orchard has been grown and managed correctly from day one. The land is favourable in both its sunny aspect and complete lack of artificial contouring, thus benefiting the trees root system development. The six blocks, four in neat lines, then two more in a 'dog leg' at the end of the property, are all surrounded by high shelter. Wind and frost are the enemies of avocado. This orchard is well protected and gets minimal frost, even by comparison with neighbouring land. It has never lost a tree to frost. Deliberately planted so the sun courses the trees east to west, thinning and pruning has been a priority, with the aim of creating widely spaced open trees able to produce even crops, structured so that spraying and picking is very efficient with minimal fruit loss. The vital component in this orchard is that 100 pollinisers have been planted, one between each tree. Those in the industry understand that avocado prefer pollen from a different variety so the planting of pollinisers dramatically enhancing the pollination process and scientifically increases the odds of getting a good crop every single year; this is supported by orchard yields to date, with the best yet to come from an orchard which has yet to reach its full potential. The flush on the trees indicates an excellent crop to come this season. Good circumference tracks, an easy driving contour, and an efficient load out area make day to day management of this orchard both efficient and effective. The current owner spends approximately ten hours a week on orchard maintenance, less during the winter. While there is no dwelling on the orchard there are a couple of possible sites which could be developed without losing trees; one which would especially enjoy the northerly aspect and local rural outlook. However with Katikati just five minutes down the road it would be perfectly feasible to live in an urban environment of a thriving country town while running one of its most successful local orchards.
