New Zealand's waterfront pubs... the best place to enjoy 'a cold one' at the height of summer.

There are few better spots to wash down a good batch of fish and chips than at the local pub... and even better if it happens to be on the water’s edge. No matter where you are in New Zealand you are never far from the nearest pub, hotel or bar and with thousands of kilometres of coastline, New Zealand can lay claim to some of the most idyllic settings in the world. For years these spots have been quenching the thirsts of holiday makers and locals alike and serving hearty meals to satisfy the appetites of weary fisherman and beachgoers.

In this issue of Waterfront magazine we showcase pubs, hotels and bars which have cemented themselves as local institutions, to the point that many also serve as the community hall or fishing club. If the rugby is on you’ll be lucky to find a spare seat in the house and most weekends you can find live music to while the night away. Many of these establishments boast rich histories dating back as far as the early 1800s and while the heritage of these places remains, they have moved with the times to meet demand from the discerning diners of today.

Customer feedback will tell you classics like the fish and chips or beef pie are still the favourites, but more refined offerings are hitting the menus as chefs move away from the deep fryers and look towards the gastro-pub model. Proprietors are also introducing craft beers, ciders and top shelf wines to keep up with customer tastes for a growing selection of boutique beverages coming onto the market.
