From lockdown to lifestyle

The joys of hiding

An unspoken secret of lockdown is… many many people loved it. Privacy, personal space with just yourself or some loved ones, focussing on the garden and your pets, and generally escaping from the everyday interactions of the world – nirvana! Cantabrians who are reluctant to let that go, find themselves – literally – in a position that’s the envy of the world. Our cities and towns are surrounded with beautiful rural living opportunities, all within easy distance. If you need to work in the CBD or in the thriving suburban business parks and malls, the stunning post-quake motorway infrastructure makes connections so much better. Or if you’re really living the lockdown dream and working from home, internet upgrades constantly rolling out across the region make this possible from almost anywhere.

Mark Pringle, Bayleys Rangiora lifestyle block specialist, says that in 30 years he has rarely witnessed a market like the one experienced in Canterbury right now:

“There’s an intense level of interest in lifestyle blocks around Christchurch right now. There was quite a surge in the market after the earthquake when many people left the city for districts like Waimakariri. This time though, we are getting interest from further afield – including from ex-pats living in Melbourne who are very keen to come back after enduring lockdown over there.”

It’s not all sunshine and free-range chickens…

There are many aspects that new lifestylers have to consider when choosing the right property for them, and we’ll be covering some of these topics in upcoming issues. Your local Bayleys rural expert will be happy to advise on practical aspects that you may not have considered, from water availability to septic tanks to the impact of any agricultural activities happening around you.

Doing the math

But for many people doing the math right now about the scale of property that their funds can get them in the countryside versus in a city, the decision to fundamentally change their lifestyle is clear, and the timing is now. After such a tumultuous year, buyers are focusing on the important things of life, and for many, that’s the joys of hiding.
