Manawatu is part of four districts that together make up the Manawatu-Wanganui region. Manawatu is centrally located between Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa, Rangitikei and Horowhenua. It is strategically placed to access all four regions, and is the second largest region in the North Island. Since Manawatu is largely agricultural, Palmerston North provides a vital link in the services to the country surrounding it. The city, with a diverse multi-cultural population of over 82,000 people, provides the best of both worlds, with the amenities of the city and the charm of the country.

Palmerston North is home to Massey University, which opened in 1928 with 85 students and now has a role of over 35,000 internal and extramural students. Massey is also home to a leading, well established and innovative agricultural research facility.
