Known affectionately as the ‘fruit bowl of New Zealand’, Hastings is famous for its expansive fruit orchards, supplying vast quantities of pip fruit each year. As one of the two major urban areas in Hawke’s Bay, Hastings is a thriving city with top-class cycling trails and walking tracks, as well as being home to exceptional natural features including Te Mata Peak and Cape Kidnappers, a natural habitat for the world’s largest nesting Gannet colony.
Located on the Heretaunga Plains, Hastings is easily recognisable by its unique character buildings, drawing large crowds of tourists each year. After a large earthquake devastated the area in 1931, much of Hastings’ residential and commercial buildings were rebuilt in the Spanish Mission and Art Deco styles of the 1930s.
Hastings’ popularity also stems from its large number of wineries in the area, owing to its exceptional sunny and dry summer and autumn climate. The extremely popular Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market offers an array of boutique and artisan food each week.
