Board of Directors
John Bayley has been actively involved in New Zealand’s real estate industry for more than 40 years. He joined the real estate industry in his early 20s working with his father Graham for Hamilton-based agency Matthews and Hyde.
In 1973, Graham and John established Bayleys Real Estate. The company’s first office was in Papatoetoe and much of their early business revolved around the commercial and residential development of former farmland in the South Auckland region.
An office was established in Auckland's central business district in the early 1980s and for most of that decade Bayleys focus was on the commercial and industrial real estate market where it became a substantial player. Bayleys conducted most of the large corporate property disposal programmes of the late ‘80s when it introduced the concept of portfolio marketing to New Zealand. With a dearth of property buyers in New Zealand after the share market crash, John and David Bayley also pioneered new offshore markets for New Zealand property in the Middle East and South East Asia.
Throughout the 1990s, John led a strategic initiative to expand Bayleys nationally across all sectors of the market, in all parts of the country, and a national franchise network was established. John has remained very ‘hands-on’ in the business and plays a key role in managing large sales projects and dealing with high net-worth clients. He has an extensive range of investor and property developer contacts both nationally and internationally.
Mike Bayley is the managing director of Bayley Corporation Limited and has ultimate responsibility for overseeing the operations of Bayleys Realty Group, Bayleys Property Services and Bayleys Real Estate Limited.
Mike is a graduate of Auckland University, an associate of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand and has more than 15 years experience in the property industry both within New Zealand and internationally. During his rise to the top of the company, Mike was general manager for the real estate operations of the Bayleys Group, responsible for overseeing the agency and transaction side of the business.
Mike has also spent time working in the property sector offshore including positions managing Bayleys’ operations in Asia and Australia.
Mike’s agency background has been predominantly in the commercial and industrial property sector, where he has worked alongside many of Australasia’s largest corporations. Transactions are the key to a successful real estate business and Mike, together with his fellow directors and senior executives, is never far from the deal action remaining actively involved in negotiations with vendors and purchasers on a daily basis.
David Bayley has more than 30 years experience in the real estate industry, and was one of the founding directors of Bayleys Real Estate in the early 1970s. He and brother John Bayley are the principal shareholders in Bayleys.
He has directed a number of substantial corporate marketing programmes over the past decade and holds Land Institute of New Zealand accreditation on behalf of the company for the marketing of Government-owned property. David also heads Bayleys' international property activities, liaising at a senior level with Bayleys' international marketing and sales partner, Cushman & Wakefield. He was instrumental in establishing subsidiary Bayleys Asia in the 1980s, and was a pioneer in the marketing of New Zealand property in South-East Asia.
Ross George is the founder and managing director of Direct Capital, a private New Zealand equity fund which owns a 30 per cent stake in Bayley Corporation.
Direct Capital invests into private companies to provide the capital to grow and continue creating value. Direct Capital has invested in such companies as Fishpond, New Zealand King Salmon, GoBus, Shears & Mac4, Rodd & Gunn, Stratex, EziBuy, Ryman Healthcare, and Max Fashions.
Ross George has been in the private equity industry since 1987, and has been involved as an investor and director in many private companies in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand, from start-ups to large private businesses. From 1985-1992, Ross was a founding director and shareholder of the BKW Group, a Hong Kong based private equity house that managed private equity funds exceeding NZ$100 million.
Nigel Burton is a senior corporate commercial lawyer whose practice primarily focuses on commercial property acquisitions, property disposals and developments, statutory compliance, business structuring and financing.
He is regularly involved in complex, high-value transactions involving land acquisition and leasing, construction and development and forestry projects including carbon trading.
John Hart was appointed coach of the All Blacks rugby team in 1995 after building the great Auckland team of the 1980s, and leading the new wave in New Zealand rugby that swept the All Blacks to victory in the 1987 Rugby World Cup.
With a vast corporate background in human resources for Fletcher Challenge’s international operations, John immediately began putting his stamp on the All Blacks who won 17 out of 18 tests under his guidance.
Currently, John runs his own consulting business and is a director of Sky Network Television, Cullen Sports, and the Vodafone New Zealand Warriors, as well as donating a considerable amount of timeo smaller private and charitable organisations.
