Rural Insight -
Confidence has returned
Grower and buyer confidence is up following another solid harvest. Tray numbers, total Zespri grower return (TZG), and early-season orchard gate return (OGR) have all improved. Buyer enquiry is lifting, and the 2025 licence auction confirmed strong interest in premium varieties.
Increase in number of sales
Transaction volumes have risen. Out-of-industry buyers are re-engaging, drawn by yield potential. Many growers are ready to expand after a period of consolidation.
Proven performers drive value
Buyers are focused on orchards with strong yields, reliable water, good infrastructure, and location. G3-dominant blocks continue to attract institutional and grower-led interest.
Selective market behaviour remains
Demand is strong but targeted. Well-located, high-performing orchards are moving well. Lower-performing blocks may need sharper pricing or longer campaigns.
Post-harvest efficiency and infrastructure in focus
With volumes expected to grow, packhouse alignment and efficient logistics are critical. Road and port access will increasingly influence marketability.
Development and new variety demand
Buyers are seeking green orchards for G3 or future variety conversions, with growing interest in upcoming red and green kiwifruit types. Licence auction results (250can/ha released; final price of $561,000/ha for unrestricted and $488,000/ha for restricted) and sustained buyer enquiry for bare land support confidence that development will continue and global demand for kiwifruit remains strong.
