Historic homestead invites future family

The Tauranga Historical Society notes, "Woodhill in Grange Road is the second house built on his farm for Henry Stainforth Brabant (the first being Mangawhare). Fitzgibbon Louch, an Irish architect and Katikati settler, designed the 'domestic Gothic' style house and David Lundon built it in 1885. Kauri logs from the Coromandel were milled on the site. The whole building is clad with timber weatherboards and has a corrugated iron roof."

The society notes that "The house held an imposing position on a ridge looking across the Waikareao Estuary to what was then the small town of Tauranga."

Tauranga is now a large city and Woodhill now stands not on a farm but on over half an acre (2,271 sqm more or less) of relative seclusion from neighbouring properties.

The well maintained home still retains its original features, like timber wainscotting, the kauri panelled ceiling of an exceptionally high stud, an elaborate splayed bay window and verandah fretwork. The graciously versatile interior spans reception rooms and bedrooms which offer scope for reconfiguration for family life; the kitchen and bathroom would benefit from an upgrade befitting the style of the dwelling.
