+15This home is a paradox. It is that unusual result of intelligent design; a happy blend of contrasts. Glinting in the morning sun, zincalume cladding looks eye-catching and ultra-modern. Yet this material, combined with native grasses and stacked stone columns, also helps the home blend into its quiet rural setting in Culverden, North Canterbury.
A modern classic, then, a distinctive design that is at one with the landscape, artistic yet practical. This is the last project of the late Christchurch architect George Lucking who was a personal friend of the owners.
Essentially, the house consists of two buildings: the living areas; and the bedroom wing (three double bedrooms and two bathrooms) and double garage. The entranceway links them. Sunlight floods through overhead skylights set into the sloping cathedral ceiling with river boulders forming an internal wall with a pellet fire set in the centre of the room close to the wall.
