Receiving year on year capital fertilser inputs, resulting in Olsen P averaging 34 and delivering above average stocking rates. Average annual rainfall of 1200 to 1500mm provides reliable spring and autumn months and outstanding growing conditions.
The comprehensive reticulated water system services all 86 main paddocks and is fed from a substantial pond located centrally on the farm. 360 ha's of flat, to rolling cultivatable and finishing contour underpins performance, providing an array of production options, most recently beet for winter crop, summer chicory, and 440 bales of grass silage and baleage from summer surplus feed.
The Pongaroa contour and growing conditions allow a policy providing flexibility with trade stock supplementing the underlying sheep and beef breeding and finishing system on farm. Weighted towards cattle, Pongaroa carries a predominantly Hereford and Angus breeding herd of circa 330 head. All progeny are retained and finished. Additional trade stock and dairy grazing works in with the dairy system from the sister unit at Iron Clover. Introduction of a Wilshire ewe flock, currently running 2,100 to the ram and circa 750 hoggets making up the balance of capital livestock on the farm, with all non-replacement lambs finished on farm alongside trade lambs brought into the system as margin and surplus feed allows
