It's not often we come across tidy Avocado production blocks in the Maungatapere area - but here's one that will tick the boxes. Located on the northern slopes of Whatititiri mountain, split into four evenly sheltered blocks and spanning 5.24ha (subject to title), this orchard has had three of the four blocks redeveloped with young clonal rootstocks with two now starting production.
The choice will be with the new owners whether to redevelop the remaining mature block which consistently yields between 14-20t/ha, or keep the cashflow going until the new blocks reach full production.
Significant capital has been invested in the redevelopment, with the original trees being mulched, roots and stumps removed, deep ripping, removal of rocks, cultivation and finally contouring to assist with drainage. All blocks are irrigated with pressure compensated sprinklers with water supplied via two shares in the Maungatapere Irrigation Scheme.
As far as management goes, you can choose to run the orchard under management or join the club and become a 'hands-on' owner-operator and enjoy the grower lifestyle that many others have come to love.
Being in the main Horticulture Hub and in close proximity to Whangarei, access to orchard support services is usually just a phone call away, as are contractors when some of those jobs need to be done in a timely manner.
For those that are new to the industry, there is an experienced network of advisors and growers that are only too happy to assist so you can hit the ground running. The NZ Avocado Industry continues to maintain its momentum in the export scene with established and new emerging markets.
It's a great career and great lifestyle - are you ready for it?
