Waikato’ s largest marquee and party hire business for sale

A specialist Hamilton party hire business, which is the largest operation of its kind in the region, has been placed on the market for sale.

Hamilton Party Hire is a market leader in the Waikato, supplying a range of marquees and equipment to parties, functions and corporate events throughout the upper North Island. It has a trading legacy of 27 years.

Its current owners have decided to pursue a new direction and have placed the business on the market for sale as a going concern with Bayleys Tauranga, through a tender process closing on March 6.

The business offers an opportunity for an investor to take over an established operation with a strong reputation, said Bayleys Tauranga salesperson Brendon Bradley who is marketing the business.

Under the existing lease, there are two further rights of renewal and final expiry of 2023. The annual rent is $200,000 plus GST.

“Hamilton Party Hire has a reputation for providing high-quality products, attention to detail, and exceptional service. Referrals continue to be a major source of continued work, with social media, print and radio, and Grab One voucher deals also being utilised,” said Mr Bradley.

“Hamilton Party Hire has a prominent location at 17 Maui Street – close to Waikato’s premier shopping centre Te Awa, the fastest growing residential areas in Hamilton and State Highway One, which receives a high volume of traffic. The business operates from a modern, purpose-built premises which includes a large showroom, drive-through warehouse, a storage and kitchen area, and offices.

“The company’s reputation has been established over almost three decades and it has a comprehensive customer database including, private individuals, businesses, event organisers and large corporations who use it for one-off and repeat events. Its existing database supports the business year round.”

Among the main hire products the business offers are marquees, bouncy castles, plastic flooring, chiller trailers, chairs, portable toilets, tables, cutlery and crockery. Large events comprise up to 40 percent of the company’s annual income.

Major events the business has supplied equipment for in the past year include Balloons over Waikato, Auckland’s Christmas in the Park, Auckland Marathon, Taupo’s Ironman NZ, Whangamata Fishing Tournament, Auckland’s Pasifika and Diwali Festivals, and the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival.

“Customers have the option of collecting and returning many hired items or can opt to have them delivered to a site, set up and in the case of large-scale functions, to have staff on-site throughout the event,” said Mr Bradley.


“November through to April is the busiest period of the year for bookings and income. National Agricultural Fieldays in June provide a major boost to the business during the winter months while other items such as bouncy castles, marquees and catering equipment are hired year-round.”

Trading hours are 8am-5pm Monday to Friday and 9am-2pm Saturday. The business employs a core staff of five full-time employees, while casual staff are employed through the summer months or when needed for specific events.

Among the inventory for sale with the business are several trucks and trailers, a very large range of marquees, commercial bouncy castles, portable toilets, barbecues, lighting, refrigeration units, glassware, cutlery and crockery, catering equipment and some disposable stock such as balloons and plastic plates.

The business represents multiple opportunities for an experienced business operator to grow the turnover, said Mr Bradley.

“A number of endeavours could be pursued, which take advantage of the location and scope of the business. For example, the market for bouncy castles has continued to grow with demand exceeding supply over the summer months. This side of the business could be extended, particularly marketing them as part of children’s birthday packages.

“In addition, there is potential to grow the wedding market with the purchase of specific items such as feature lighting, table-top pieces, and high quality furniture, as a niche area of the business.”
