Hidden gems that’ll make you want to trade the city for serenity

There’s no greater feeling of escapism than ditching the hustle of the city for the slower pace of a forest or the countryside, and that zen-like feeling you get isn't a coincidence either. Several studies around the world have confirmed the science to back it up, revealing that exposure to nature is associated with lower levels of stress and reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Locally, a 2018 study by the Mental Health Foundation found that 95% of Kiwis said that spending time in nature during the week made them feel good, and 75% said they intended to spend more regular time in nature.

Bayleys head of insights and data Chris Farhi agrees with the findings, and says the covid pandemic further reinforced the demand for natural environments.

“Many people saw the value in getting out into nature after being stuck inside their homes during the lockdowns, and being able to access those kinds of environments from your back door makes it even easier to get some much needed relief.”

Farhi says remote working trends have also made it easier for people to live how and where they want, as long as the right infrastructure is available.

“Whether a buyer who works from home is a good fit for a remote property will depend on the availability of high speed internet, and transport connectivity. In some locations this will be possible, others less so.”

While you may think a luxurious home nestled among nature will come with a hefty price tag, Farhi says the pricing for some of these properties can be surprisingly affordable - especially if you make use of short stay services like Air BnB.

So if that isn’t enough to convince you to trade the city for serenity, perhaps the majestic mountains, lush greenery or pristine rivers surrounding these off-the-beaten track listings will.
