It’s time to start promoting Christchurch

Christchurch has a great story to tell and it’s time we started making ourselves heard, was the message given to attendees at last week’s Bayleys@5 event.

A vibrant and enthusiastic crowd of investors, commercial property owners, developers and valuers turned out to hear the latest update on the city’s progress.

Guest speaker, Steve Clarke, director of investment and engagement at Development Christchurch Ltd, told the crowd his organisation was one of three rebuild entities formed to replace the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA),when it was disestablished in April, last year.  It works closely with the other two agencies, Otakaro Limited, and Regenerate Christchurch.

Steve explained that the role of Development Christchurch Ltd is to provide commercial advice to Christchurch City Council and project delivery, and act as a conduit between the public and private sectors. “It’s a facilitation role,” he said. “We want to see the private sector thrive.”

Questions from the audience were welcomed and discussion ensued around the ease of development and dealing with the three agencies.  It was suggested that a similar event that also featured representatives from Otakaro and Regenerate would be helpful in the future.

Steve said it was important that we started thinking about the messages being sent to politicians in central and local government.  “We need to be forward-thinking and defined by what we are now and what we are going to be,” he said.

“We have to start selling our city and we have some perceptions to change. The most important people in the city are the people who live here. Let’s be realistic, we do have problems with demand, but we have to start selling this city as a place people want to come.”

Steve praised the Bayleys@5 event as an excellent opportunity to explain the organisation’s role to interested parties.  “Functions like this are seriously important,” he said. “It allows us to network and convey information to you and, also for us to hear what you have to say.”

Before the event, participants were treated to a tipple of fine whisky from the expert team at Christchurch-based, Whisky Galore.
