Guests at the annual Hawke’ s Bay A&P Bayleys Wine Awards sipped on a selection of the region’ s finest wines during what was the largest ever awards dinner in the event’ s 14-year history on October 21.
Around 480 people, including local wine makers, sponsors and industry experts, filled a marquee at the beautiful Waikoko Gardens for a formal four-course meal interspersed with presentations across 24 award categories to celebrate excellence in the industry and what has been touted as the ‘vintage of the century’.
Comedian and television host Jeremy Corbett entertained guests throughout the evening as they enjoyed dishes prepared by top local chefs and EIT culinary students.
Principal sponsor Bayleys Realty Group has supported the event for the past three years and general manager Greg Hornblow was on hand to present the prestigious Champion Wine of Show award to Villa Maria for its Single Vineyard Keltern Chardonnay 2013.
Havelock North artist David Trubridge made a unique trophy, incorporating the grape leaf into his design, for the flagship award which was accepted by Villa Maria viticulturalist Ollie Powrie, Villa Maria Hawke’s Bay vineyards manager John van der Linden and Villa Maria Keltern Vineyard manager Phil Holden.
